Hello mates,
In exam specifications for grades 5-9, the third grammar and vocabulary question is selection partial where students have to complete the unfinished words. This question has 10 items to finish in consideration of both grammar and vocabulary in context. Besides, students must spell the word correctly and it has to be with the right ending.
Results show that almost all students face difficulty in this question. Many students write the correct words but with tiny spelling mistakes. Others write the correct words with the correct spelling but wrong ending. It’s not only spelling and correct ending that makes this question challenging but also it’s usually very general and not related to the language focuses and vocabulary of the book. And what makes it even worse is to have more than 3 items sometimes in the same sentence, which is very confusing for students to get the context of the text or the dialogue.
In the DOC it’s stated that the first grammar and vocabulary question focuses on vocabulary only while the second on grammar with 5 items each. Students have to choose the correct answer in one and to fill in blanks in the other, that’s fair enough because spelling must be correct in one question only. Meanwhile, the third question has 10 items itself and it’s for both grammar and vocabulary with correct spelling and ending. Some may argue that the integration of grammar and vocabulary is essential. However, they are clearly integrated in writing if it’s the case. Besides, in grades 10-12 there’s no such question where vocabulary and grammar and merged in one.
I suggest having 4 questions for grammar and vocabulary with 20 items instead of 3 with 20 items. Two questions with 5 items each for vocabulary. One multiple choice question and the other is fill in gaps which means spelling is a must in one question. And one of them is a text while the other is short sentences. The same is for grammar. It’s more fair, isn’t it?
