افتتح في العاصمة البريطانية لندن برج يبلغ ارتفاعه 310 أمتار ، ويوصف بأنه أطول مبنى في غرب أوروبا بينما تستعد لاستضافة فعاليات الأولمبياد. ويضم برج شارد ، حسبما هو معروف بسبب شكله ، فندقا فاخرا ومحلات فاخرة ومكاتب ومطاعم وشقق خاصة ومنصة لمشاهدة كل مناطق العاصمة.
وقام المهندس المعماري الإيطالي رينزو بيانو بتصميم البرج وبلغت تكلفة تشييده 5ر1 مليار جنيه استرليني ( 3ر2 مليار دولار).
ويشبه المبنى الواقع بالقرب من نهر التايمز في منطقة ساوثوارك وسط العاصمة هرما أو صاروخا ينطلق إلى الفضاء. وتتقاسم دولة قطر ومجموعة سيلار العقارية ملكية البرج وقام بتمويله بنك قطر الوطني. وتم افتتاح البرج امس الاول بحضور رئيس وزراء قطر حمد بن جاسم بن جبر الثاني والأمير البريطاني أندرو.
وقد وصف شقيقه الأكبر الأمير تشارلز ، المعروف بكراهيته للهندسة المعمارية الحديثة ، البرج بأنه ” قبو ملح عملاق”.
غير أن بقاء برج شارد كأعلى مباني في أوروبا سيكون لفترة قصيرة حيث ان بناء برج ميركوري سيتي تاور ، الذي يبلغ ارتفاعه 332 مترا في العاصمة الروسية موسكو ، شارف على الانتهاء .
