Let us assume that your teacher gave you a homework. You are required to write a paragraph about "Gold". Here are step by step guidelines:
1. Read about your topic
It is useful first to read about your topic in some well-known encyclopedias like www.wikipedia.com (http://www.wikipedia.com) . you may also use a search engine like Google, Yahoo etc.
2. Narrow you topic
Gold is such a broad topic. In fact, if you are going to write about "gold" this will take more than a 1000-word-essay. So let's narrow this topic. Supposing that you have decided to write about the characteristics of gold. Again this is still broad. So we will limit our paragraph to two important characteristics of gold.
3. Make an outline
a. Decide your topic sentence. A topic sentence consists of two parts : a topic and controlling ideas. See below
Gold, a precious metal, is prized for two important characteristics.
b. Following the controlling ideas, you will write only about two characteristics. So decide what they are
1. Resistant to corrosion
2. Useful for industry and science
c. Add one example or two to each idea
1. A Macedonian coin survived to this day
2. Gold is used in astronaut's suits
3. Write a conclusion
Gold is beautiful and useful
Now you can write your paragraph. You can add or change some words, add signals etc
