English sentence
There are three main points to consider when writing an English sentence. first of all, make sure the sentence is complete. i.e. it contains a subject and a predicate. second, your sentence should be short. That is, use as few words as possible to convey your message as long sentences can distract the audience. finally, check your sentence for meaningfulness. consider your audience and ask yourself : If I were the one who will read this sentence whould I be able to understand it correctly?. If you apply these three tips to each sentence you write your writing will improve considerably.
Checklist for paragraph writing
1. Is the format correct?
2. Is there a clear topic sentence? Does it have a controlling idea?
3. Is the main idea clear? Do you need to add more details to explain it?
4. Is there a concluding sentence? Does it begin with an appropriate end-of-paragraph signal?
5. Do all the sentences support the topic sentence?
6. Do the sentences flow smoothly? Are there any inconsistent pronouns? Are transition signals used?
7. Are there any unclear sentences?
8. Are there any errors in grammar and mechanics (punctuation)?
Tips for writing
- Maintain the basic word order throughout your writing
Subject + verb+ direct object + indirect object
- Choose the most relevant subject and put it at the beginning of the sentence
- Put the subject before the verb
- Keep the subject and the verb as close as possible to each other
- Avoid inserting any unimportant information between the subject and the verb
- Don’t separate the verb from its direct object
- Put the direct object before the indirect object
- Learn where to locate an adverb within the sentence
- Put the adjective before the nouns they describe or use a relative clause
- Do not insert the adjective between two nouns or before the wrong noun
How to write a paragraph
Let us assume that your teacher gave you a homework. You are required to write a paragraph about "Gold". Here are step by step guidelines:
1. Read about your topic
It is useful first to read about your topic in some well-known encyclopedias like
www.wikipedia.org . you may also use a search engine like Google, Yahoo etc.
2. Narrow you topic
Gold is such a broad topic. In fact, if you are going to write about "gold" this will take more than a 1000-word-essay. So let's narrow this topic. Supposing that you have decided to write about the characteristics of gold. Again this is still broad. So we will limit our paragraph to two important characteristics of gold.
3. Make an outline
a. Decide your topic sentence. A topic sentence consists of two parts : a topic and controlling ideas. See below
Gold, a precious metal, is prized for two important characteristics.
b. Following the controlling ideas, you will write only about two characteristics. So decide what they are
1. Resistant to corrosion
2. Useful for industry and science
c. Add one example or two to each idea
1. A Macedonian coin survived to this day
2. Gold is used in astronaut's suits
3. Write a conclusion
Gold is beautiful and useful
Now you can write your paragraph. You can add or change some words, add signals etc
